The Program

In August 1999, Green Sphere Executive Director, Frank Melli, visited the Kaiapo village of Aukre in the Brazilian rain forest. Green Sphere raised funds to pay for the installation of two water pumps, which helped reduce infant mortality and illnesses in adults. In Portland, Maine, a citizen presented our video on food irradiation in the spring of 1993 to the Maine Agricultural Committee…The bill, which would have allowed the irradiation of food, was subsequently defeated unanimously by that committee, due, in part, to our video.

Socially Responsible Programming

Brasil New York

There is a shortage of environmental news and information in general in the mainstream media. Established in 1988, Green Sphere Inc. is preparing to launch its latest television broadcast series Brasil New York. In 1991, executive director Frank Melli, produced , which washosted by Clarence “C.B.” Bullard who was the head of the Jazz department of Atlantic Records. Jazz on Tour ran for 9 months and featured artists such as Ahmad Jamal, Lew Soloff, Bob Baldwin, and Joyce from Rio de Janeiro. Jazz on Tour infused environmental messages into program. Brasil New York plans to use the same format of live jazz performances and artist interviews as a vehicle for environmental messages.

Protecting the planet

We have been actively working with the Kaiapo - one of the indigenous tribes of the Amazon rainforest - to prevent deforestation of this important land. One of our proposed projects is to use the Kaiapo’s traditional and indigenous knowledge to develop an effective system for monitoring environmental and climate changes. We are presently producing: Stone Age Generation: Kaiapo - Guardians of the Rain Forest. Also recently completed was the purchase of a solar powered ham radio for communication in a new Kaiapo village.
Green Sphere has managed to transcend color/ethnicity, class, age and gender - and build a network of committed environmentalists, cultural workers and mass media activists.

The Need

Generally, the mass media has functioned reactively--in response to environmental and social crisis. Something more is needed--a means by which to express views, make suggestions and take direct action. Through its interactive town meeting format, Green Sphere is providing such an opportunity.
