Green Sphere Visits Kayapo Village in Amazon
In Fall of 2004, Green Sphere sent three representatives to the village of Aukre on the Kayapo reservation (southern Amazon Basin - Brazil) in efforts to bring aid to these natives of the rainforest. Our efforts are aimed at preserving the native culture, as theirs is a culture that is friendly and interdependent with the surrounding ecosystems. The Kayapo live in harmony with the rainforest, and do not destroy the forest to keep their culture strong. The leaders of Aukre are teaching the other Kayapo villages to stay true to their culture by living in harmony with the rainforest, and not destroy it. This is being accomplished by sustainable economical alternatives such as Brazil nut oil extraction. Having the strongest political lobby of the remaining 170 tribes still living in the wilderness, the Kayapo are among the best known protectors of the rainforest because it is their home, and because of their non-destructive use of its resources.
The Amazon Rainforest has been described as the "Lungs of our Planet." Most importantly, they are a major source of the world's gaseous nitrogen which is circulated by the trade winds and break down pollution on a global level.-Alice Benzecry PhD. Fairleigh Dickinson University
During our visit, we were able to find out that the Kayapo are looking for someone to establish a business relationship with. They grow and harvest Brazil nuts which have many nutritional benefits. They also extract the Brazil nut oil which in the past was used by a well known cosmetics company, and are looking for buyers of their Brazil nut products. If you know someone who might be interested in doing business with the Kayapo, please contact us at the address info@greensphere.org
